Here are the Toyota Prius’s common problems:

  • Brake issue- some owners have reported having issues with the breaks while at most times it might be worn brake pads, it is important to remember that there were recalls of some models due to a brake issue(around 2010 models). If you are buying a Prius in this model year, make sure you confirm that the issue was fixed.
  • Stalling and loss of power- There was a recall for some Prius cars for the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 models due to the risk of loss of power and stalling. This means if you are going to buy a foreign used Prius within this model year, you should check if the particular car is in the trims that were recalled and if the previous owner took the car for fixing the issue by Toyota.
  • Oil consumption- this is an issue that has been reported by some owners of the car. If the issue is been caused by leakages, you can replace the broken parts, however, the problem might be with the engine and you might have to replace it.
  • Fuel gauge- some drivers have also reported the fuel gauge failing or giving incorrect readings. If this occurs, it means you will not know when running out of fuel and the best thing is to repair or replace it.

One common question most car buyers ask is, will the hybrid battery be a problem in a Prius? According to Toyota, the battery should last up to 240,000 kilometers mileage or up to 10 years. However, most people have reported getting great service beyond 15 years but there are still some cases where the battery dies before the 10 years mark. To make sure you are safe, test the battery modules when buying your Toyota Prius.
